APPALACHIAN TRAIL
Famous hiking trail that runs 2200 miles from Maine to Georgia. We are
within ½ mile of one of
the trail entrances.
- VIRGINIA CREEPER TRAIL
Multi-purpose rail trail in Southwest Virginia that stretches 35 miles,
from Abingdon to Whitetop. The trail is famous for its many trestles, beautiful scenery, creeks, valleys, and the thousands of people who come here each year to bicycle and hike. There are
shuttle rental companies in Damascus
and Whitetop who rent bicycles and take you to whatever point you want to start your ride.
- Grayson Highlands State Park
Miles of hiking and horseback riding trails. This beautiful park also has picnic areas and a visitor’s center with mountain crafts and artifacts. The park also boasts of its wild ponies which
live there year round.
- Whitetop Mountain
The views from this mountain are unbelievable. At an elevation of over 5000 ft. it earns
the reputation of being the 2nd highest mountain in Virginia. Drive to the summit and you will have
a panoramic
view of three states.
- Mt. Rogers
Virginia’s highest mountain with an altitude of over 5700 feet.
- Beartree Lake
A Mt. Rogers Recreation Area, Beartree features fishing, swimming, picnicking, and hiking. It
is located approximately four miles from us.
- Wayne C. Henderson Festival
Grayson Highlands State Park – always held the third Saturday in
June (rain or shine). Click link for this years line-up.
- Whitetop Mountain Ramp Festival
A fun-filled day of music, dancing, crafts, food, and a ramp (wild onion) eating contest. See how
many ramps a person can eat in three minutes!! Fun to watch. Festival is held the 3rd Sunday in May. Come to Whitetop Fire Hall and enjoy the festivities.
- Damascus Trail Days
Events taking place May 18-20, 2012. This is a must visit event which celebrates the Appalachian Trail. There are craft vendors, food vendors, corporate/retail vendors, and best of all….the townspeople has a yard sale all over town.
- Fall Festival, Grayson Highlands State Park
Lots of music, crafts, food, and demonstrations of old-time ways of life. Festival is held the last full weekend in September. There is also a pony auction to sell some of the wild ponies that roam the mountain.
